One of the most sought after and hard to find pieces or Mid-Century Modern design, created by artist Marcello Fantoni (1915-2011), in collaboration with Raymor, Made in Florence, Italy in the late 1950’s, early 60’s. Fantoni was born and worked in Florence, Italy. In 1936, he opened Fantoni Ceramic Studio in Florence. During the war he fought for the resistance and shortly after worked at Maiolica factory in Deruta, Umbria, an ancient ceramics studio dating back hundreds of years. in the 1950’s, He worked with many collaborators at his studio until 1970 when he founded the International School of Ceramic Art. His work is collected by many notable museums world wide.
We have only been able to identify 3 other similar examples of this design, and only one other Lamp example which is closer to a cat design than Lion. Consider this as of the most rare pieces in our collection, now with the opportunity to make it yours. This design is often miss-identified as an owl.
Excellent condition overall, the Lions head was repaired at some point. The repair seems to have been executed by a professional, and is barely visible. The entirety of the ceramic remains structurally sound. The bottom of the lamp was opened to wire the lamp. This black painted base is where the signature once was.
Measures 22”tall ceramic Lion. (36” tall with lamp shade included) 12.5” wide, 6” deep.
