Antique (1890) original oil on board painting by Forshaw Day, Canadian, 1831-1903. Excellent condition, framed in gold painted wood frame. Depicting a tranquil scene of a gently floating boat on a calm Canadian lake in Summer. No damage found. Some slight crazing to the oil less than to be considered consistent with age. This piece was likely hung somewhere mostly free from sunlight for most of its life.
Forshaw day was born in 1831 in London, England. He attended two colleges for Architecture before emigrating to Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1862. Forshaw taught painting and worked as a draftsman for much of his career. He held consistent exhibitions in Halifax for 20 years, as well as sending his art away to art shows abroad to London and Paris. In 1879 he moved to Kingston, Ontario to teach at the Royal Military College of Canada, and continued to travel around Canada and the world over to paint landscapes and maritime scenes. In 1880, he was one of the founding members of the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts. He died in 1903 in Kingston, Ontario.
