Carl Blair (American, 1932-2018), "Red Crater" Oil on Canvas Circa 1960
An original abstract painting by American artist Carl Blair (1932–2018). Executed in a bold palette of dark purple, deep maroons, blacks, and muted blues, the work reveals Blair’s signature approach to abstraction, layering geometric and gestural forms into a richly textured surface. The composition balances structure with spontaneity, evoking an atmospheric and contemplative mood.
Born in Atchison, Kansas, Blair became a pivotal figure in South Carolina’s art community, both as an artist and educator for more than 40 years, and his works are now held in numerous public and private collections. He was color blind, but did not know until asked to create a self portrait for his studies at the University of Kansas. He once called his color-blindness an asset because he was "not hindered by color combinations.” This piece exemplifies his mid-century abstract style of his early works, marked by depth, movement, and an expressive handling of color.
